Looking to cool off close to the city centre? Stavanger offers plenty of scenic spots for a swim, all within easy reach by bike, bus or on foot.
Vaulen
This is Stavanger’s most popular beach – and it’s easy to see why. With several small sandy coves, play areas on both land and sea, diving boards, a sand volleyball court, and barbecue spots, there’s something here for everyone. The area is accessible to all, with a ramp for wheelchair users and clean toilet facilities. You’ll also find nearby parking and walking paths.
Godalen
Tucked along the peaceful shores of Gandsfjord, Godalen is a favourite among families and those who prefer a quieter swim. There’s a small beach, smooth rocks for sunbathing, grassy lawns, a playground, grills, and toilets – all in a relaxed, green setting perfect for unwinding.
Badedammen
Right beneath the city bridge lies one of Stavanger’s oldest and most distinctive swimming spots. This seawater pool has docks, a small beach, a slide, outdoor gym equipment, bike parking, a playground, and barbecue areas. On sunny days, it’s a lively meeting place for both locals and visitors of all ages.
Møllebukta
Located in Hafrsfjord by the iconic Swords in Rock monument, Møllebukta offers a unique mix of nature and history. The shallow waters are ideal for children, and the area includes grassy spaces, a fitness park, showers, a drinking fountain, a snack kiosk, a floating dock, and toilets. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a summer day, with a bit of culture on the side.

This heated outdoor pool is open all year round. You can swim laps in a 25-metre pool, relax in the sauna, and enjoy fresh air right in the heart of the city. Gamlingen offers changing rooms and seating areas, and it's a local favourite among both fitness swimmers and casual bathers.

Located in the city centre, this long-standing swimming hall is something of a Stavanger classic. It features multiple pools and diving platforms, and serves both training purposes and public access—ideal for a rainy day or for anyone looking to stay in shape.

Craving warmth with a view? A seaside sauna might be just what you need. Damp is a mobile, wood-fired sauna often found in the Lervig area – a cosy wooden cabin with large windows and a staircase leading straight into the sea. Swimming Spots in Sandnes
Sandnes offers both fjord and lake swimming. Bråsteinsvatnet, Hogstadvika and Holmavika are popular with families, featuring sandy beaches and green areas. By the Lysefjord, you’ll find Dørvika – complete with a jetty, picnic tables and a lean-to shelter – while Alsvik by Kyllesvatnet offers smooth rocks and calm waters surrounded by nature.

The coastal municipality of Sola is home to some of the region’s best beaches. Solastranden is shallow and inviting – perfect for long beach days and watersports. Ølbergstranden is smaller but charming and family-friendly, with food options and toilet facilities. You’ll also find quieter swimming spots like Sjøbadet at Myklebust, and amenities such as saunas and SUP boards are available at several locations.

The Jæren coastline features some of Norway’s most beautiful beaches. Borestranden, Orrestranden, Refsnesstranden and Holmasanden are all ideal for swimming, surfing and kiting. The beaches in Klepp, Hå and Randaberg range from wild and rugged nature to more child-friendly areas. You can take the train to Brusand and Ogna, while other spots are best reached by car.

Refsnesstranda is a hiking destination along the Norwegian Scenic Route Jæren. Here you'll find a small and beautiful sandy beach in the south that turns into a pebble beach in the north and an unusual restroom facility.
Island Getaways and Fjord Swims in Ryfylke and Kvitsøy
If you have access to a boat or feel like taking a short ferry ride, there are plenty of great swimming spots in the archipelago. On Kvitsøy, Sandrenna and Grøningen offer child-friendly conditions. Around the Ryfylke islands – including Fåholmen, Prestvågen, Skartveitvågen and Lineholmene – you’ll find numerous places where you can swim straight from the smooth coastal rocks.

In the heart of town, the River Park features potholes and waterfalls – like a natural water park!

If you’re looking to combine a mountain hike with a refreshing swim, Sirdal is the place to go. Lakes like Nesetfossen, Øksendalsvatnet, and the swimming area in Sirdal Mountain Park are perfect for just that. The Lund, Sokndal, and Bjerkreim areas also offer plenty of idyllic lakes – including Rusdalsvatnet, Linepollen, Hofreiste, and Refsvatnet – many with sandy beaches, docks, and toilet facilities.
