Mountain peaks

Romsdalseggen

Step into one of Norway's most stunning mountain worlds. Embark on the iconic Romsdalseggen hike to Åndalsnes and enjoy 10 kilometers of spectacular views over some of Western Norway's most majestic mountains.

A Top Attraction in the Northwest

Like a massive rooster comb, the Romsdalseggen rises up from the deep Romsdal valley. And for good reason, this mountain hike has become one of the top attractions in Fjord Norway. A demanding but rewarding experience. From the ridge, you'll have 360-degree panoramic views of some of Romsdal's most famous peaks, including the Venjestindane, Romsdalshorn, and Trollveggen. You can also gaze all the way to Molde city and the Atlantic Ocean, while watching the Rauma River snake its way through the landscape far below.

  • Season: Mid-June to early October
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Ascent: 970 meters
  • Highest point on the hike: 1,329 meters above sea level
  • Estimated time spend: 5-8 hours

Via Ferrata – Rampestreken – the Romsdal Gondola

At the end of the Romsdalseggen hike, you'll come to Nesaksla (708 m.a.s.l.) where several trails and outdoor enthusiasts converge. You'll meet those who have climbed the Via Ferrata and those who have hiked from Åndalsnes via Rampestreken – but also those who have taken the Romsdalsgondola up to Nesaksla. At Eggen restaurant, you can enjoy refreshments, a snack, or a more substantial meal before continuing your descent to Åndalsnes town center on foot or by gondola.

Be well prepared when hiking the Romsdalseggen

The Romsdalseggen hike is demanding and requires you to be well prepared. You must be in good physical condition, have the right equipment, and understand the weather forecast. The trail goes through varied terrain – from forests to airy sections and bare mountains up to 1,329 m.a.s.l. In some places, you'll also need to do some scrambling. The weather at the top can quickly turn cold and inhospitable, and if you're not familiar with the area, we recommend going with a local guide.

How to get to Romsdalseggen

Romsdalseggen is probably one of Norway's most sustainable mountain hikes. You can take the train from Oslo or Trondheim to Åndalsnes, then continue with the Romsdalseggen bus to the starting point of the hike in Venjesdalen. The hike itself takes you back to Åndalsnes on foot. Here, the train awaits to take you on your journey home. But of course, we recommend staying a few extra days – there's so much to experience in Romsdal and the surrounding area.

Parking in Åndalsnes

If you're coming to Åndalsnes by car, we recommend parking at Rauma Kulturhus and Romsdalseggen Parkering. This is the closest parking when you come down from Romsdalstrappa and Rampestreken. From here, it's about a 5-minute walk to the Romsdalseggen bus.
