Villages and places
Smøla
Far out in the open sea, north of Kristiansund, lies Smøla – a prairie-like archipelago with thousands of islets and skerries, lively fishing villages, and stunning nature. Local culture, sea eagles, paddling opportunities, and the famous fishing village Veiholmen are just some of what awaits you when you come to the island with its beautiful light.
A lively archipelago
Smøla has boat connections to both Kristiansund and Trondheim. The main island, with the municipal center Hopen, is surrounded by over 5,800 small islands, islets, and skerries. Large parts of the island are protected, and with its rich wildlife and open landscape, Smøla is a paradise for sea fishing. Many accommodations offer guided fishing tours and boat rentals.
The fishing village of Veiholmen and coastal culture
On Smøla, coastal culture lives on – authentic and unpolished. Nets still hang to dry, and the boathouses are filled with life. The lively fishing village of Veiholmen, once the largest south of Lofoten, offers accommodation, cafés, and coastal charm – no matter the weather.
Sea eagles, kayaking, and northern lights
Smøla is known as the kingdom of sea eagles – and by kayak, you can get up close to both the birds and the archipelago. Many choose to join a photo safari or explore the area from the water. In the fall, the Northern Lights dance across the horizon, while summer offers cultural events and outdoor theater at Gurisenteret. And when hunger strikes, you'll find several great dining spots on Smøla, where the sea and local tradition create distinctive flavors.
